Three bills are being proposed right now in congress that threaten community TV stations and the cities ability to maintain local control of who uses their streets and airwaves to make a buck. Senator Ensign (R-NV) is proposing one being dubbed "The Ensign Bill," and the others are H.R. 3146 and S. 1349. Not only would these bills threaten community TV station funding and channel space, but they eliminate the ability for a city to sit down and negotiate for specific needs with the cable company, or ANY video service provider using city "rights of way."

Last year, CMAP produced coverage of 133 government meetings. We produced thirty projects for local non-profit organizations. We handed out 275 certifications in video productions to folks like you, your neighbors and kids. We produced public service announcements for free for fifteen non-profit organizations. We worked with Gavilan to air dozens of telecourses, arts programs, and presentations made by their administration. We trained a class of forty students at Gilroy High School how to use our three-camera TV studio at Gavilan College, so that they could produce five live call-in programs on health issues for teens. And we kept four channels filled with vibrant programming, about your communities, 24/7. This is just the beginning of what we stand to lose should recently proposed legislation pass.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Contact these folks, asking them to oppose S. 1504, H.R. 3146 and S. 1349. Tell them you want your city to maintain control of the franchise process, NOT mega telecommunication corporations. Tell them why you value community TV, how you use it, and that it's a vital communications resource for all community members.
